How to Create and Expand Your LinkedIn Profile: A Step-by-Step Guide for Young People

Young people!

After speaking with the amazing youth leaders at the Tallahassee Future Leaders Academy (TFLA), I was inspired to share valuable insights on using LinkedIn to kickstart your career.

If you didn't know, TFLA is doing incredible work to empower and equip young people with the skills they need for success.

BIG shout out to all the TFLA members for their enthusiasm and dedication!

The Tallahassee Future Leaders Academy (TFLA) is the City of Tallahassee’s award-winning summer youth employment program, led by the Department of Housing and Community Resilience.

Teens earn a paycheck working at a job placement and participating in weekly training/events. The program focuses on seven pillars:

Employment, Job-Readiness Skills, College and Career Exposure, Financial Literacy, Community Impact, Leadership, and Personal Health and Wellness.

In my recent speech to TFLA, we briefly discussed the importance of LinkedIn. I decided to expand on that topic in this blog to provide you with more detailed guidance on how to leverage this powerful platform.

In short, LinkedIn isn't just for old people like me.

Here's how to set up and optimize your LinkedIn profile to capitalize on social media for your professional growth.

Step 1: Set Up Your Profile

1. Sign Up: Go to LinkedIn and sign up using your email. It’s free!

2. Profile Picture: Choose a clear, friendly photo of yourself. No selfies or group photos. Think of it as your professional face to the world.

3. Headline: Write a short, catchy headline. It could be something like “High School Student Aspiring to Be a Software Engineer” or “Passionate About Environmental Science.”

4. Summary: Briefly summarize who you are, what you’re interested in, and what you’re looking to achieve. Be genuine and let your personality shine through.

LinkedIn Summary Example:

Hi there! I’m Alex Johnson, a high school student passionate about social media marketing and digital communication. As a participant in the Tallahassee Future Leaders Academy (TFLA), I’m gaining hands-on experience and building skills in leadership, teamwork, and community impact.

I love exploring social media and have taught myself the ins and outs of platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. I’ve enjoyed creating marketing campaigns and content strategies for school clubs and local events. Through TFLA, I’m working at a local marketing agency, learning the ropes of digital marketing in a real-world setting.

Besides social media, I’m dedicated to my studies and actively involved in my school’s drama club. There, I express my creativity and collaborate with others on exciting projects. I also volunteer with local organizations to help manage their social media accounts and boost their online presence.

I’m here to connect with others who share my interests, learn from industry experts, and find opportunities to grow in the marketing field.

Let’s connect and see how we can collaborate!

Step 2: Add Your Experience

1. Education: List your school, the years you attended (or expect to graduate), and any special programs or clubs you’re involved in.

2. Work Experience: Add any jobs, internships, or volunteer work you’ve done. Don’t worry if it’s not a fancy job; every bit of experience counts!

3. Skills: List your skills. Think about what you’re good at and what you’ve learned. Are you great at coding, writing, or public speaking? Add those!

4. Accomplishments: Have you won any awards, completed any special projects, or participated in competitions? Add those, too!

Example Accomplishments:

  • Tallahassee Future Leaders Academy (TFLA) Participant: Gained hands-on experience and developed key skills in leadership, teamwork, and community impact.

  • School Drama Club Member: Acted in multiple school plays and helped with backstage work, showcasing creativity and teamwork.

  • Social Media Campaigns: Successfully created and managed social media marketing campaigns for school clubs and local events, increasing engagement and followers.

  • Volunteer Social Media Manager: Assisted local non-profit organizations by managing their social media accounts and improving their online presence.

  • Coding Competition Participant: Participated in school and community coding competitions, demonstrating problem-solving skills and technical knowledge.

  • Academic Honors: Consistently maintained a high GPA and received recognition for academic achievements in subjects like English and History.

  • Community Service: Volunteered at local shelters and food banks, contributing to community well-being and demonstrating a commitment to helping others.

Step 3: Build Your Network

1. Connect with People You Know: Start by connecting with family, friends, teachers, and mentors. Then, expand to classmates, teammates, and anyone else you know.

2. Join Groups: Find LinkedIn groups related to your interests and career goals. Join them and participate in discussions. It’s a great way to meet new people and learn more about your field.

3. Follow Companies and Influencers: Follow companies you’re interested in and influencers in your field. This will keep you updated on industry trends and potential opportunities.

Tip: Unlike other social media platforms, it’s perfectly professional to connect with teachers, supervisors, and mentors on LinkedIn. This platform is designed for networking and professional growth, so don’t hesitate to reach out and build your connections!

Step 4: Be Active and Engage

1. Share Your Achievements: Post about your achievements, whether it’s a project you completed, a competition you won, or a new skill you learned.

2. Comment and Like: Engage with posts from your connections. Comment on their updates, like their posts, and share interesting content.

Example of a Comment:

Original Post: "Excited to share that I've just started an internship at XYZ Company!"-

Your Comment: "Congratulations on your internship! I'm really interested in [field/industry], and it's inspiring to see your success. Looking forward to hearing more about your experience at XYZ Company!"

3. Create Engaging Posts: Craft posts that share your journey, ask questions, or provide valuable insights.

Example of an Engaging Post: "Just completed a challenging but rewarding project on [topic]. Learned a lot about [specific skills or knowledge]. Any tips on how to further develop my skills in [related field]? #Learning #CareerGrowth"

4. Ask for Recommendations: If you’ve worked or volunteered somewhere, ask your supervisor or teacher for a recommendation. It adds credibility to your profile.

Example of a Recommendation Request:

Hi [Teacher/Supervisor's Name],

I hope you’re doing well! I wanted to reach out and thank you for the opportunity to work/volunteer at [Company/Organization/School Club]. I learned so much during my time there, and I’m grateful for your guidance and support.

I’m currently setting up my LinkedIn profile to better showcase my experiences and skills. Would you be willing to write a brief recommendation for me based on my work/volunteer experience? I believe your endorsement would greatly enhance my profile and help me connect with more professionals in the field.

Thank you so much for considering my request. I really appreciate it!

Best regards, Alex Johnson

Step 5: Use LinkedIn for Opportunities

1. Search for Jobs and Internships: Use LinkedIn’s job search feature to look for internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer opportunities.

2. Reach Out: Don’t be afraid to message professionals in your field to ask for advice or information about their careers. Most people are happy to help!

Example of a Direct Message:

"Hi [Professional's Name], I’m [Your Name], a high school student passionate about [field/industry]. I’ve been following your work at [Company/Organization] and am really impressed by your achievements. I’d love to learn more about your career journey and any advice you have for someone starting out. Thank you!"

Final Tips

Keep Your Profile Updated: Regularly update your profile with new experiences, skills, and achievements.

Be Professional: Always communicate professionally on LinkedIn. Remember, this isn’t Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat.

Stay Active: The more active you are, the more visible you become. Post regularly, engage with others, and maximize what LinkedIn offers.
