Learn Self-Publishing: 6 Tips for Authors Using Amazon KDP

Why you Want to Self-Publish on Amazon KDP

Recently, during a Motivational Interviewing training for NC Works, one of their team members asked me how to publish their first book. Shortly after, I received a text message from a former youth I worked with who wanted to share their journey through the juvenile justice system.

At each training I conduct, I bring C.A.P.E. Conversations: How Superheroes Communicate with Children, and instead of handing out certificates of completion, I give participants a signed copy. I’m proud to do this because the content can inspire others to connect more empathetically with young people. What I’ve found especially rewarding, however, is how it sparks conversations about their own self-publishing dreams.

In short, this blog is for anyone considering self-publishing through Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) but unsure how to start.

Here are six tips every new author should know.

The NC Works Team!!

1. Start Small—No Upfront Costs Doesn’t Mean No Costs

Publishing on Amazon KDP is free, but that doesn’t mean you should rush to spend money elsewhere. It’s tempting to hire a pricey editor or use a traditional publishing service, but here’s the truth: most first-time books don’t make a lot of money. Instead, start small. Edit your manuscript using free tools, ask trusted friends for feedback, and proofread carefully. Save bigger investments for later when you’ve built confidence and experience.

2. Stay in Control—But Don’t Be Afraid to Learn

With Amazon KDP, you’re the boss! You choose your book’s price, design the cover, and decide when to update it. But here’s the tip: take the time to learn about your options. Watch tutorials, research pricing strategies, and explore how your book's category or keywords can impact sales. Being informed helps you make better choices and feel more confident about self-publishing.

3. Use Print-on-Demand to Save Time and Space

Amazon’s print-on-demand feature means your book is printed only when someone buys it. This is great for first-time authors because you don’t need to buy or store extra copies. The tip here? Don’t over-order proof copies. While it’s exciting to hold your book in your hands, remember that print-on-demand lets you stay flexible. Order just enough for your needs and let Amazon handle the rest.

4. Think Global—Your Book Can Reach Readers Everywhere

Publishing with Amazon KDP gives your book instant access to a global audience. Here’s the tip: Use Amazon’s tools to make your book discoverable worldwide. Add relevant keywords, choose categories wisely, and make sure your description appeals to readers. Even if your focus is local, the global reach is a bonus you shouldn’t ignore.

5. Manage Expectations—Royalties Are Just the Beginning

Amazon KDP pays royalties every time someone buys your book, offering 35% or 70% depending on your book’s price. But here’s the tip: treat your first book as a learning experience, not a major money-maker. Use it to build your author brand and learn the process. Focus on creating quality content and engaging with your audience rather than expecting instant success.

6. Learn More—Read My Other Blogs on Self-Publishing

If you’re just starting out, you don’t have to figure it all out alone. I’ve written two other blogs packed with tips for using Amazon KDP. In them, I cover topics like formatting your manuscript, creating a professional-looking cover, and navigating the Amazon Bookshelf.
